Several members of the Bay Hill Conservancy participated in the monthly Ladies Luncheon at Bay Hill Marina's Captain's Table Restaurant Thursday, June 18th. This luncheon was attended by Carolyn Green, Marketing Manager of Bay Hill Marina, Helen Kloock, wife of Bay Hill Marina General Manager Arnie Kloock, Sheri Long, one of the investors who is staying through the weekend, Heather Hodges, Bay Hill Marina Operations Manager and Janet Allaway, Bay Hill Marina Bookkeeper. The Bay Hill Village residents - also BHC members - attending were Maria Miller, Linda Grinde, Betty Benson, Mary Radant, Betty Harrison, Wilda Davis, Jayne Schmidt and Bay Hill Conservancy co-founders Carroll Adams and Debi Bradford (that would be me!)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2v8VPnyPnPXdaDnLSyGCz0stHw07_eJo8n5kCTqfmM705x7j789-xfFgUNW0OHnJ-j2gBJLc80Hg15y12oCL2C9RiAC-J74FMPrknayEr3G-RC_w6vWOHhNZeIB9vJPoH7YTb598DOx-H/s320/IMG_2349_900x600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349040937427752130" />

Bay Hill Village is such a fun place to live. Visitors are taken in by the grace and charm of the Village as well as the amenities that it offers. The Ladies Luncheon was born on a whim. Several ladies wanted to meet and chat over cool salads and warm breezes, and the monthly event has since grown to include 15-20 people! We enjoy getting to know the Bay Hill Marina owners and staff as well as seeing neighbors and meeting new residents.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW15zaGnsjPWqntDM3NKYv3az9B5XpjuLwG5oz-85USKkIf71Zs5pnJnHyNWUWGIstVTGY2dGCjzsEm4ERXHzo2AFmBt-jxL_e2oJUvQ_ojQXRngY-z8sIyOtbf3tt_RdUNgD4E5lIiG4l/s320/IMG_2348_900x600.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349040836123511362" />

If you haven't tried Captain's Table Restaurant you are missing a treat. Tony and Carolyn Green, new owners of the Bay Hill Marina and Resort, Captain’s Table Restaurant and Safe Harbor Yacht Sales were overjoyed at the crowd who came to hear about their visions for the marina’s future.

Tony began by thanking attendees for their patience this summer as the purchasing process went on longer than anticipated. However, delay turned into opportunity as Tony and Carolyn were able to observe daily operations and plan changes to implement immediately upon closing. Tony emphasized that this is a village and is advertised as such and they intend to be a part of the village.

Carolyn & Tony Green

Their motto is “Service, Service and More Service,” and they are big believers in FREE. Small things make a difference. One example Tony gave is that when boaters are filling up at the marina pump the children are given free Popsicles, and boaters are given free bags of ice. Watch your e-mails and this blog for details. In the meantime, enjoy excerpts from an article Debi found in the August-September 2006 issue of Cabin Life Magazine.

Loving Your Lake

10 Tips for keeping your water clean and healthy - forever

By Steve McComas

"How can you ensure that the lake you love remains beautiful and healthy for generations to come? You can show your love for your lake by incorporating these 10 tips into your lake life.

1. Buff up the buffer: A lakeside buffer is a growth of unmowed native vegetation from the shoreline extending to upland areas. Grass mowed down to the edge of the water is not a true buffer. Although it provides groundcover, it is not effective for filtering pollutants in runoff water, and it's poor wildlife habitat.

2. Let a fallen tree lie: Shallow water near the shores of lakes are vital nurseries for all fish species as well as a variety of birds and animals. Practically all fish species rely on nearshore habitat at some point in their life cycle. Deadfall - such as a fallen tree in the water - provides great habitat

3. Control exotics: If exotic species are present in your lake, they will be nearly impossible to eradicate. Is there a prevention program in your lake? Does your lake association mail out information on spotting and controlling exotics plants such as Eurasian watermilfoil?

4. Minimize mowed lawns: Rainwater and snowmelt runoff can deliver clean and pure water to a lake - and that's a good thing - or it can deliver fertilizer components and sediments - and those are bad things. Mimic Mother Nature's work if you can.

5. Avoid fertilizing: A native groundcover should thrive without fertilizer. However, if you do use fertilizer consider using phosphorus-free varieties.

6. Balance plants and algae: A battle is always raging in lakes between plants and algae. When plants win, the result is usually clear lake water. You can help the plants win.

7. Maintain that septic system: A malfunctioning septic tank system can contaminate nearby drinking water wells and deliver unwanted materials to the lake.

8. Catch and release: Why is fishing fun? One of the reasons is fish taste good. Releasing most large fish back to the lake helps maintain balance through the fish community.

9. Keep things in check: Sometimes just a simple visual checkup can help point you in the right direction. Example - check the runoff patterns on your lot (is it eroding, is there sheet flow, any problems?), check water running off roofs and gutters, check detergents and use non-phosphorous detergents if possible; properly store hazardous chemicals.

10. Monitor the lake health: Several benchmark tests can be used to gauge lake status and some things can be monitored just for fun. Daily journals of wildlife observations and lake phenomena can be handy references.

So keep a journal, let your shoreline grow au natural, release the lunkers and fertilize your garden with leftover bait minnows. All these activities can make your lake a little bit better. And if you and our neighbors all take care of your lake, it can be enjoyed by many, many generations to come."

To read the complete article click on this link: "Loving Your Lake"Bay Hill Conservancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16167587237242672260noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892688649188457244.post-48562818728023418022008-06-08T08:33:00.029-05:002008-06-08T09:17:13.269-05:00Spirit Award to Villas II
Most mornings find me walking my faithful companion, Baylee, our "Berniel." (Bernese Mountain Dog meets Spaniel) We usually walk to the marina and back, with occasional side trips to the barges to sit and watch the sun rise over the eastern shore before returning home.

Baylee is always on alert for the odd dove or dog or cat or killdeer, which amuses her to no end, as does smelling each blade of grass and every shrub. For myself, I enjoy the scenery. This spring I've been delighted each morning walking the sidewalk past Villas II, and have made their houses a must for my morning "House & Garden Tour."

Villas II epitomizes all that each of us desire in a neighborhood. These neighbors have banded together and agreed to form a corridor filled with flowers and American flags. This work in progress has been a joy to watch. Our generous spring rains coaxed early blooms in abundance across the street from my house. Each house has also decorated with fun lakeside adornments that make me smile with each passing.

I sent them a note in May and asked if I could take photos of their yards to post them on our Conservancy blog. This isn't necessarily Bay Hill Conservancy educational material, granted. However, Carroll and I both feel compelled to recognize Villas II as an area that is working together to create the kind of beauty and camaraderie we all wish to see throughout this neighborhood. "It Takes A Village" is an over-used phrase, but most certainly it applies here at Bay Hill. Please take a moment to drive or stroll past Villas II and soak up the beauty that they have created. As far as the Conservancy, we just wish to recognize their efforts and give them a Virtual Spirit Award. Congratulations, Villas II!

Please enjoy these photos of the gardens and houses of those who agreed to be photographed:

Betty Harrison's villa

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209506687242805698" style="DISPLAY: block; It also caused various birds and creatures to seek shelter during the all-day downpour. Unfortunately, some of us at Bay Hill attracted millions and millions and millions of what I've been calling those Weird, Obnoxious Swarming Things to our porches and doorways, and plastered upon our houses. They reminded me of Maylies the way they hummed overhead and lifted up in frenzied angst when you walked by them. See the photo above? They were that thick all over my porch and house. Ick.

They don't bite, they don't eat foliage or fruits, but they do emit a black, tarry goo that's close to impossible to remove. What ARE these things? Where did they COME from?!

Ah, I know. I'll ask Damien Simbeck, our TVA Wildlife Biologist and Friend of Bay Hill.

A section of the ceiling of our front porch. Ahem.

Damien answered my e-mail quickly, and Carroll and I wanted you all to know what these creatures are.

In Damien's own words: "Appears to be one of the many Chironomids (midges) found in this area. This group is VERY diverse, and VERY common. The larvae are very tolerant of variable water quality conditions, so they are typically found everywhere. Although they do have population fluctuations, they are usually common every summer around the area (any where near water, that is). Like you said, they do not bite (or even feed as adults). They merely live a day or two, reproduce, then die. The entire population will probably emerge, reproduce and die within a few weeks, then they will be gone until next year (of course, other species have the same cycle, and they may emerge at different times of the year).

I have not seen a decrease in mayfly populations along the area reservoirs. May be a local decline (movement of populations, changes in reservoir substrate, etc.) that you are noticing at Bay Hill. The same cause(s) may explain the recent increase in midge populations."

Note: I had asked him about the decrease in Mayfly populations, but apparently that's just happening here.

So now we all know that these Weird, Obnoxious Swarming Things are - Midges.

Bay Hill Conservancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16167587237242672260noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892688649188457244.post-11676077087894372392008-04-24T12:04:00.006-05:002008-04-24T13:32:08.306-05:00New Entrance Signs!
East Side Entrance Sign

You've no doubt noticed the new entrance signs at the corner of Bay Hill Avenue and Snake Road. Yeah, the signs are great....but the land around them looks terrible! The signs are low to the ground and there is a lot of stuff behind them competing for attention. The marina clearly overshadows the east-side sign, and the west-side sign has that house behind it. The west-side sign has other problems as well, like a row of old boxwoods between it and the street, and a light pole. BUT NOTE - any landscaping for that area must and will wait until autumn. Why? This summer the drought is expected to continue, and that could be the death knell for any new plants put in those particular areas. Again, why? New plants required LOTS of water and attention in order to become established. The Bay Hill Conservancy has recommended the use of native plants which, when established, will require lots less maintenance. However, they must be established just like any other plant. Water is key, and the water issue will be worked out before autumn. Autumn, winter and spring rains, if we get them, are critical. Regardless, even through winter, watering has to be monitored even if we half to schlep gallon jugs of H20 in the back of our cars or golf carts and hand water each plant.

So, keep your eyes on the prize - next spring they will be Fabulous!Bay Hill Conservancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16167587237242672260noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4892688649188457244.post-35931161727934730402008-04-20T07:35:00.007-05:002008-04-20T08:00:31.878-05:00Patty Kimm Gallery #2 - Casper and the Mallards

Larry & Patty's cat, Casper, would like to befriend the Mallards

The Mallards snub Casper and head into the bay

There are apparently lots of tasty snacks for the Mallards here.

This appears to be Mallard nirvana

One of Bay Hill Conservancy's missions is to provide education about our our flora and fauna. When they land they must feed immediately, and they look for the color red. The reverse is true for migrating north - when they reach the coastline at the Gulf of Mexico they look for red, and some cities ban the hanging of red towels, red sheets, etc., because it will confuse the birds and they could starve. You CAN hang red towels up to attract them if you have feeders close by, so to attract them. Our own Red Buckeyes that line our banks naturally (I have a ton!) attract hummingbirds. They're an excellent native shrub or small tree. The hummingbirds will be here soon!

It's not necessary to purchase nectar for hummingbirds. A simple 1 to 4 mixture of sugar and water is all that's required. 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. NO MORE THAN THAT, or it would harm the birds. Also, do NOT use soap to clean feeders. Just water. If you need to use something, use SALT as an abrasive and rinse well.

The audience is fascinated

COVER
Damien showed the various styles of bird houses and was very entertaining with stories of his and his volunteer's experiences in the field checking bluebird houses. He gave us a good tip for keeping House Sparrows (who will kill bluebirds, btw) out of bluebird houses, and said that bluebirds do NOT like the condominium kind of arrangement. They want their own nest with lots of space around them. If you plan to put up more than one bluebird house make sure they are spaced at least 200 ft. apart.

In addition to the houses one can buy, natural cover is necessary for protection as well as nesting. Native plants provide the best of everything for birds - protection, cover and is usually a food source with berries and/or fruits. Damien gave us a list of native plants that would attract songbirds, and informed us about several non-native plants that are becoming intrusive, like privet, Bradford pears, mimosa and - just added to the list - nandina.

Brown Thrasher Nest in a Locust Tree on our bank

Interesting Fact

We were fascinated to learn that the invasive privet is the direct cause of the change in our American Robin's migration pattern. Most are found right here nearly every day, or migrate through during their season.

We laughed at Damien's description of the "Lord God" birds - the huge Piliated Woodpeckers and over sized Fox Sparrows. ....you just had to be there, folks.

We learned that White Breasted Nuthatches will only climb down trees and a Brown Creeper will only walk up trees. Mockingbirds will repeat a song multiple times while a Brown Thrasher will only repeat a song twice. Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks were seen at feeders last year thanks to the early killing frost, because that frost killed their primary food source - new green buds. House Finches were originally native to the western US, but bird smugglers were caught with hundreds of cages of them in New York, so they released the "evidence" into the wild, and now they're everywhere. Purple Finches do NOT like House Finches. Damien has seen Baltimore Oriole nests along the Tennessee River made of fishing line. Those were just a few highlights.

Damien Simbeck

Damien grew up in Lawrence County, Tennessee. His father, a high school biology teacher, was an avid naturalist and taught Damien to know and appreciate the plant and animal life around him. He joked about being born with binoculars around his neck. Damien attended the University of the South, then the University of North Alabama where he received a Bachelor of Science in professional biology. He received a Master of Science in Zoology from the University of Tennessee. His primary field of study was aquatic biology including fish taxonomy and biogeography.

Damien has a dream job, imho. He is employed as a Watershed Representative for the Tennessee Valley Authority, which means his office is usually lit by sunshine, he gets to count birds, and walk in fields and forests, and along riverways and streams. The occasional snake doesn't seem to bother him. He probably has some bad days, but then again...he gets to play outdoors and meet interesting people and see fascinating things. No doubt Damien will will scoff at my description of his job!

Female Bluebird poses for her portrait

Damien works with volunteer organizations to reduce the spread of invasive species on TVA properties, and has become one of the area's leading bird watchers. For those who are new to the Conservancy, this project was our way of thanking Rivers Edge Condominium's HOA who graciously loaned us use of their conference room for our first two meetings. The sun was shining but the winds were brisk out of the north and west. My heavens, we all had our hats and hoodies yanked up over our ears to keep out the chill throughout most of the task!

Jan Perkins and Betty Benson pet the branches to soothe them after pruning

Carroll Adams gave a tutorial about "How To Prune (and not murder) a Crepe Myrtle" while Debi Bradford did a demonstration. From the middle of Rivers Edge Way Carroll, Betty Harrison and Linda Grinde headed north to work together, and Debi, Jan Perkins and Betty Benson headed south. Splitting the task made the work go smoothly and quickly.
Betty Harrison works her magic on this crepe myrtle.

Thanks for letting me take your photo, Betty!

The longer we worked the better the trees began to look. We laughed about petting the tree branches to soothe the cambium, and there was a rumor going around that some were talking to them as well. I wouldn't have been surprised - we all felt a kindship with these crepe myrtles and are looking forward to see them bloom this summer.

Linda Grinde attempts to weed the impossible

BUT WAIT! It was indeed impossible. The beds haven't been kept up, and bermuda grass has completely taken them over. We'll have to leave that to Rivers Edge HOA to handle as they'll probably need to be completely redone. Four happy souls enjoyed camaraderie and laughs while pruning the crepe myrtles along Rivers Edge Way, and weeding the beds located at the signs beside Snake Road. My personal apologies to Linda Grinde - I didn't give her enough time to stand upright before taking this shot! Sorry Linda!

Betty Benson, Linda Grinde, Carroll Adams and Debi Bradford worked down the eastern side of the road, pruning and weeding. Carroll took pride in placing the lighting once more in proper spots or setting them correctly. Betty and Linda weeded the eastern-most bed. Kayla Bradford and Baylee Bradford come to visit. Carroll handed out ACES informational sheets on how to prune crepe myrtles - a complete tutorial will ensue during the next Work Day.

We did NOT finish! After working an hour and a half we were very tired and "slap happy." We agreed to schedule another work day SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1:00pm - weather permitting. BYOT again, and we suggest bringing water. There are about 8 more large crepe myrtles to prune, and some finish work to do. I cannot stress enough one point of our mission - education. Every one of us have lots to share, and we all want our community to band together for the larger good. Please send Debi links to your own web page, websites of interest, etc. if you would like them added here. Our blogspot is a growing, living thing to reflect our support of the community of Bay Hill Village. Bay Hill Village includes River Breeze Condominums, Bay Pointe Condominium, Rivers Edge Condominium, the Villas, all the waterfront homes and Bay Hill Marina. Let's not forget our live-aboards, too. Am I forgetting anyone?

Carroll Adams penned a letter and talked on the phone with Bill Lattimer, our County Commissioner, regarding trash pickup. Bottom line - the county does not offer a yard trash pick up service. He recommended we look into contracting with a particular tree service. Member discussions also involved working with local yard maintenance folks with which several members contract individually. Another option is the BFI transfer station, where they charge $7 per load. Larry & Carroll took a truckload - 10 trash bags filled with leaves - and it cost $7, to clarify. However, they do have the occasional FREE dump day. Also discussed was holding a Spring and Fall "Bay Hill Clean Up Day" - perhaps with a more creative title - and contracting for someone to haul off the entire neighborhood's yard trash. Lots of good, creative sharing occurred in this conversation.

Marilyn Bachelor updated us all on the new entrance sign project. Marilyn, Rachel Foster and Dennis Holliman have met with the contractor and Dennis has graciously "volunteered" to oversee the work and keep it on target. Also discussed was a future project - new road signs. Hey we can dream, can't we? Marilyn Bachelor ROCKS as sign committee chairman and she got High Fives all round!

We all had lots to say regarding environmental concerns. 1) Hazardous waste and what the heck to do with it, and 2) the pile of asphalt and old railroad ties north of Phase 3. We learned that piling up OLD asphalt is okay, but piling up NEW asphalt is a no-no. Also railroad ties are considered hazardous. The burning of TREATED lumber is also hazardous as chemicals within the wood causes noxious fumes all manner of bad stuff released into the air. (stop me if I get too technical...) Debi (that would be me) offered to research this issue and report back.

Then we switched to the fun stuff! The Audubon Annual Backyard Bird Count, whose link has been added to the site, is just a fun way to learn about birds in our area. Counting them is the beginning of appreciation! Carroll passed around the Audubon Endangered Bird List, upon which are listed MANY of our Bay Hill feathered friends like the red headed woodpecker.

Carroll briefly outlined the list of "Concerns" from the first session and asked for any additional concerns for the list. Remaining at Number 1 is the White Fence, but nipping its heels is the high grass and nasty looking houses in the main entrance way. Betty Harrison offered to tackle that issue.

Carroll and Debi brought up pruning the crepe myrtles along Rivers Edge Way to show our thanks and appreciation to the Board for the use of a meeting room for free. However, we must first tackle the issue of how to haul the limbs away.

Betty Harrison and Jan Perkins will co-chair the next planner, which will be a New Year Mixer sort of party thing at a place to be determined. Suggested was Bay Pointe Condominiums or the Marina as we want to share the love and meet all over Bay Hill Village - All For One and One For all - that kind of thing.

Tentative date is SATURDAY, JANUARY 5 - 10:00 AM.

The Bay Hill Conservancy members offer our THANKS to the Board and Members of Rivers Edge Condominium HOA for the use of their meeting room.

Bay Hill Conservancyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16167587237242672260noreply@blogger.com0
